Anatomical Fictions: Representing the Vagina
Wellcome Collection, London
2th September 2017
Brazilian sculptor Juliana Cerqueira Leite presents a performative talk on her artist book, A Potential Space, that was acquired by the Wellcome Library. Her book is a work of ‘anatomical fiction’ that re-imagines how the vagina is represented.
A Potential Space proposes a re-reading of the cultural and theoretical frameworks that surround representations of the female sex. The book contains no printed text. Instead 83 laser-cut pages accrete into a small negative form. Each page reveals an individually cut outline derived from a 3D scanned body cast. These outlines combine to represent the inner topography of a vagina, originally cast inside of a body, now contained as negative space within the book.
Following the talk, a Q&A with curator Nora Heidorn further explores the politics of the medical gaze onto the female body.
